Barney Lowe is a trumpet player based in London.


Originally from Hampshire, Barney started playing trumpet at the age of 10 and was soon playing with many local bands in the area. After gaining an interest in jazz at the age of 17, he began to perform with various youth big bands, such as the Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra, South East Hants Jazz Project and Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra. During his time with SYJO, he performed and took part in masterclasses with top musicians such as Tom Cawley, Julian Joseph, Soweto Kinch, Portico Quartet and Japanese pianist Hiromi. He also appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival and appeared on Southern News Channels with SYJO. 


Whilst studying at sixth form college, Barney gained an ABRSM Diploma in Trumpet Performance. After sixth form college he took a gap year to gain valuable musical experience and work towards Music College auditions - he is now studying in his final year of the Jazz Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Through the GSMD, he has performed with world class musicians such as Wynton Marsallis, Terell Stafford, Marvin Stamm, Henry Lowther, Stan Sulzmann, Mark Lockheart, Jacqui Dankworth and Nikki Iles. During his time at Guildhall, Barney has also taken part in masterclasses with musicians such as David Leibman, Randy Brecker, John Schofield, Christian McBride, Gretchen Parlarto and Norma Winstone.


Big Bands are one of Barney’s main musical passions. He has performed regularly with NYJO, Jeff Hooper Swing Easy Big Band, Stuart Fowler Jazz Orchestra (Lead trumpet) and many other bands across the country. Barney also plays Lead Trumpet in his own Big Band, London City Big Band. This has been running since 2011 and has developed a reputation for becoming one of the top big bands in London.


Barney enjoys working as a freelance musician around London and the UK. He has performed on musicals such as West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, Hot Mikado and Mack & Mabel to name a few. He regularly performs with top UK functions bands such as Pandora’s Jukebox, as well as other pop, swing and latin bands.


Over the years Barney has had the opportunity to appear in many prestigious venues including The Barbican, Cadogan Hall and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Barney has appeared at the Royal Albert Hall on three separate occasions, including once with NYJO for the BBC Proms, which aired live on BBC Radio 3 and later appeared on television.


Barney teaches privately around London, as well as working in recording studios and arranging music. He travels around the country to perform.
